What is haylage?
Much like hay, haylage is preserved grass. However, to make haylage grass is ensiled, or picked, rather than dried as it is to make hay. Although this process can in many ways produce a product closer in nature to grass than drier hay, it also has its drawbacks.
Haylage tends to be “richer” and more “heating” than hay. Gut issues, such as recurrent loose droppings, are commonly reported when horses are fed haylage. This may be due, in part, to the more acidic nature of haylage when compared to hay, and the lower dry matter may also be a contributing factor. Furthermore, it might not be a coincidence that the recent raised awareness of gastric upset – such as ulcers and stereotypic behaviour – ties in with the increased preference for feeding haylage.
